Since You Didn’t Ask is, first and foremost, a blog that contains all the unsolicited advice (or sometimes just opinions) that I don’t give in person. Most likely we all know at least one person who is happy to offer advice as soon as you tell them something newsworthy. (And sometimes you don’t know them at all – strangers can be funny that way.)
“Congratulations, on your wedding, here’s what you need to do…”
“You’re pregnant?! That’s so exciting! This is what I did…”
“You’re picking that major? Have you thought about…?”
Everyone gives and receives unsolicited advice at some point, but my personal goal has been to give advice only when asked for it. Have I been perfect at it? No, but I do acknowledge when I start to rattle off without being asked. That being said, people don’t give advice unless they think it holds value. So if people don’t ask for my valuable advice, I might as well put it online…since you didn’t ask.
Advice, it seems to me, is primarily rooted in a person’s experiences, whether it is to say what went well or warn against what went wrong. However, in this blog, I will do my best to also include advise from others. First piece of advice? Codie Sanchez, business owner and founder of Contrarian Thinking, recommends taking advice from those who are successful at what you are trying to do. If a person is giving you advice on owning a business but has never owned one themselves, why listen to them? Seek out people who own successful businesses for advice instead.
All that to say, Since You Didn’t Ask will be what you didn’t know you needed or what you know you didn’t need. Either way, thank you for joining me and reading what I have to write. I look forward to counseling you again in my next post.
